Your attitude and willingness to co-operate is the key to success with your new hearing instruments. First time user will discover many new sounds, which was disguised by your hearing loss. Sounds like footsteps, the ticking of a clock, the refrigerator, the humming of an aircon, the rustling of a newspaper will become audible again.
At first, these sounds may be overwhelming and seem too loud. But this is perfectly normal and it is not because the volume is set to loud. You must remember your brain has automatically adjusted to a lower level due to your hearing loss and it should readjust to its original level. Your brain must relearn how to focus on the sounds that are important and filter out the rest.
The more you wear your new hearing devices the the less you will want to be without them.

- Start of by using them in quite situations like one on one conversations at home with family and friends;
- Call someone and use the telephone. Listen to the radio and the television
- Then use them in busier environments like in the busy street and in your supermarket;
- For many people the most challenging environment to hear in is in restaurants. Use the tips for out and about in these challenging environments.
TIPS FOR OUT AND ABOUT.
- When attending a meeting or seminar arrive early and pick the front row where you can clearly see the speakers face and lips. Don’t hesitate to ask the speaker to use a microphone.
- If your hearing instruments feature a so called telecoil, ask the cinemas and theatres about induction loops, this technology improves hearing with you hearing instruments.
- When going to a restaurant ask for a table in the corner, and face away from the noise.
TIPS FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS
- It is important to inform your family, friends, and colleagues about you wearing hearing aids, tell them what they can do to make communication easier for you:
- Speak at a natural pace, do not talk to loud or shout
- Avoid noisy areas; find somewhere less noisy to communicate
- Do not talk while chewing or smoking
- Move closer to the speaker, his face must be well lit where you can easily see his lips and facial expressions
- The speaker should try to keep everything out of the way from his lips, like any body parts, newspapers ext.
- If the listener has difficulty understanding, do not repeat yourself but try to rephrase the sentence.
TIPS FOR LOOKING AFTER YOUR HEARING AIDS
- When not in use, open the battery door to extend the battery life
- Clean you hearing instruments daily and put them “to bed” in the drying cup provided
- Always keep you instruments clean and dry
- Clean your hearing instruments daily with the brush and cloth provided, do not make use of household cleaning products, water or any other liquids.
- Check that the sound outlet of your instrument is free from earwax
- Make sure to remove your hearing instruments before you go showering, swimming or before you apply hairspray
